Release Note
Introducing CodexGauge 1.0.0
North Wolf Labs is releasing CodexGauge 1.0.0, a native macOS menu-bar app for monitoring Codex allowances and local task activity.
Codex makes a great deal of useful information available, but it is spread across allowance windows, account activity, and individual tasks. CodexGauge brings that information together in one place. It uses the Codex helper and content-free local metadata already available on your Mac, so there is no additional login, API key, or account token to configure.
The menu bar provides the quickest view. By default, CodexGauge shows the allowance with the least remaining. Opening the popover reveals every allowance window returned by Codex, including remaining percentages, reset times, credits, spend controls, earned resets, and pacing estimates when enough information is available.
CodexGauge also follows work happening on the local Mac. Live and recently active tasks can show their current phase, turn duration, token rate and mix, latest context use, response-start latency, and linked-agent count. These measurements describe local task activity; they are not an estimate of how much of the account allowance any one task has used. Tasks running only on another computer are not visible locally.
For a wider view, the Dashboard brings allowance details and account activity into a larger native window. It includes daily activity, comparisons between time periods, lifetime token totals, streaks, peak days, and longest turns. The app keeps all live tasks and up to 200 recent root tasks from the previous 24 hours, while the smaller menu-bar popover stays focused on the most recent work.
Notifications are optional. CodexGauge can provide low-allowance alerts and privacy-safe attention alerts when a local task needs input or approval. Notification text remains generic and does not include task names.
Privacy is part of the foundation of the app. CodexGauge has no analytics, backend, updater, or telemetry upload. It does not model or retain prompts, answers, reasoning, command output, tool contents, email addresses, credentials, or authentication tokens. Preferences, notification deduplication keys, and the latest account snapshot are the only information persisted by the app; task telemetry remains in memory.
The interface is built with AppKit and SwiftUI so it behaves like a native Mac utility. It supports keyboard navigation, VoiceOver descriptions, Reduce Motion, and light and dark appearances. The app is also designed to stay quiet when it is not being used: hidden popovers and Dashboard windows release their temporary views, timers, charts, animations, and state, while local session monitoring relies on event-driven updates with bounded fallback checks.
CodexGauge 1.0.0 supports Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14.4 or later and requires ChatGPT or Codex to be installed and signed in. The release is Developer ID signed, hardened, notarized, and stapled by Apple.
To install CodexGauge, open the downloaded disk image, drag CodexGauge to Applications, and launch it to place the gauge in the menu bar.
